An astute student, Cooper began writing surreal stories at the age of twelve. He was influenced in his early years by French novelists and directors such as Jean Cocteau, Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet. The son of conservative parents, Dennis Cooper was educated at Pasadena City College and Pitzer College, a private liberal arts college in Claremont, California. He is best known for his autobiographical novels that feature intense analyses of human obsessions and relationships.
